WILLIAMSON and LINDSAY Families

The Williamson and Lindsay familes were joined in 1925 with the marriage of John Hendry Williamson and Jeanie Lindsay.

The Williamsons hailed primarily from Scotland’s east coast - Montrose, Edinburgh and Dundee. The men worked on the sea or as labourers, while the women were textile mill workers, sack sewers and the like.

The Lindsays were a Lanarkshire family through and through. Virtually all of the men were coal miners, working underground all of their lives - some from as young as twelve years of age. The women worked in factories and bleachfields.

There were no titled gentlemen or fine ladies in either family, but they all lived, loved, laughed and cried and each one has a story to tell. Some of those stories are on these pages.

My Williamson-Lindsay family history begins with Charlie Williamson (1929-2004), the youngest son of John Hendry Williamson and Jeanie Lindsay. Jeanie died of tuberculosis when Charlie was just four years old - a sad loss for him and his siblings and one that he felt all his life.

As a child, Charlie was always in trouble but everyone loved him anyway. He grew up to be a funny, charming rascal who loved to tell jokes, sing and play banjo, and have a few drinks with his pals. And then have a few more. He was also a husband, a father, a brother, a sports fan and a friend. Click on the images below to read about some of Charlie’s exploits.
